Gemini is an internet protocol similar to http(s) but simpler. It is made to emulate the feel of the old internet. It’s similar to gopher if y’all remember that from way back when but with a few more features. Currently it’s still relatively niche with only a few thousand active capsules. “Capsules” are what they call websites on the gemnet. As for my experience with it, I would put it as a fun novelty but once that wears off it’s kinda lack luster. There’s no inline images so that customization is lost but I do appreciate the creativity some people get with ASCII art to compensate. I’d say it’s great for conveying information in a simpler manner but anything else tends to have less flair than on the world wide web. One more positive I’d give it is that is isn’t commercialized. There’s no seo and no adverts. For now at least, we’ll see how long before advertisers start to make pages there. I have my own capsule at gemini://gem.zooey.cc . It was fun to set up but I don’t know how much I’ll actually do with it, we’ll see.
